Get a list of the top 100 universities from (the USA, Canada, UK, etc.). Offering your program. You may use http://4icu.org for global search, and USNews.com specifically for American universities.

  1. Relevance-Remove any universities that don’t offer your program
  2. Scholarship availability (Assistantships/Funding.
  3. EASE especially if the program has additional baggage or requirements e.g. GRE/GMAT and English proficiency requirements
  4. Application fee waivers.
  5. Research interest (is there a professor in this university doing your kind of research?)
  6. Internal grants: Grad school is tough; you need financial support, among other needs.

Self Market yourself by contacting the professor(s) whom you’d like to work with using emails or even social media. Get face time and name recognition. The best way to know all the nitty-gritty details of a scholarship as well as up-to-date application requirements is to contact the funder directly! Not only will this ensure that you have all the correct information, but you will also be showing the scholarship or grant funder/provider that you are not afraid to take the initiative to actively pursue the scholarship you are applying for

Read the APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS and prepare compelling:

  • Unofficial academic transcripts
  • Recommendation Letters: contact your lecturers early to avoid rush hour

Get an Application Fee Waiver. Attend Open House events or simply request an application waive

Submit an Early Application. Usually, applications are open from October till August of the following year. Priority deadlines between December to early February.

Attend interviews (for schools that require it, especially Ph.D. programs) and await feedback. You’ll get either an ACCEPTANCE or a REJECTION.

  • If accepted, and your offer is a fully-funded scholarship, bravo!
  • If rejected, wait for other offers. If the offer isn’t fully-funded, discuss your chances of getting funding with the program director. If the Director or Coordinator of your program can’t help, reach out to professors doing your kind of research (this is where cold email works). If you’ve been in touch With them before this moment, ask if they have a research assistantship offer for you. This works especially in U.S./Canada.

Get an appointment with the embassy, and apply and get your visa approved. Show proof of funding and request immigration documents (e.g., Form I-20 for the USA).
